| OUT OF THE WOODS |
A different take on FI this week however it is still to do with yarn, but not in the way you usually expect to envisage it. As I surf the net I come across all sorts visual feasts along the way that spark my interest and curiosity | this is just what these sculptures do.
Hunting is something I consider mostly a masculine sport, but these have a serene feminine quality to them. I also find taxidermy rather macabre, however these sculptures all wrapped up in cashmere | angora | cables | fairisle | look rather cute and they make me want to pat them, however some may find them disturbing.
Rachel's mounted deer heads exhibit is called Domestic Trophies, and this exhibition is what she's best known for. She uses a variety of different materials in her work, and it's recycled jumpers that have been used here. They are often felted first then stretched around the deer head that she makes herself out of polyurethane, foam and wood. I love the way the recycled jumpers have been utilized to expose the zippers and different textures through the use of cables and fairisle, whilst the colour choices give them a fun and modern look.
| I think they're lots of fun, the question is what do you think ? |

What do I think? Would that I were as clever!! They are wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI love it, Margarita. This is definitely a Funky Inspiration Friday that appeals to me! I would love to have one of those in my craft room. Hmmm... maybe I can talk my Dad into giving me one of his many (real) animal heads so I can knit it a cozy! :)
ReplyDeletehmmm, I'm not sure what I think! I do find the idea very cool (I love the fair isle one and the cabled ones!) but I'm not sure whether I like the hunting trophy connection - I guess I don't really get hunting as a sport or the desire to mount heads as trophies, so that aspect unnerves me a bit. But I love to see knitting in such a different way. Very worthy of FIF!
ReplyDeleteheh. domestic trophies. funny. i think there is a bit of a political/feminist statement there that i like, and the recycling is a great touch. very interesting twist for FIF!
ReplyDeleteI definitely like them but would like them even more if she'd knit the sweaters herself!
ReplyDeleteI'm quite amazed by the responses so far to this post. I like the way it's made you all think and I love that mostly you enjoy them as much as I do.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your thoughts on this FIF :D
I like the creativity and the whole idea of 'reuse' - particularly the positioning of the zipper, cables etc. I also like the way she's simplified the animal shapes. Do I like the objects themselves? They make me smile for a bit, but I don't want to own them or have them around me. But then, I'm not very keen on images of animals in any form.
ReplyDeleteI so look forward to funky inspiration friday. Thanks, Margarita.
